Tallgrass Prairie Workshop

Over the last 100 years, almost all of the lands that were once part of the Coastal Prairie in Louisiana have been lost, as they were converted to conventional cropland. However, one farmer in Louisiana is working to preserve the Coastal Prairie land.

In October, the Lousiaiana GLCI is hosting a workshop at Acadia Farmer, Vernon Fuseiler's farm, where he has re-established many of the plants found on the historical Coastal Prairie on a portion of his farm. You will hear from very knowledgeable land managers with extensive experience in grazing land management. They will discuss the use of grazing animals as a tool to create and maintain a native grassland plant community. USDA NRCS Area Range Conservationist Chris Ebel says prescribed burning, which is another tool essential in native grassland establishment and management, will also be discussed in detail. Come hear how this diverse native plant community benefits soil health, pollinators, and forage for livestock.
